Bad Mouth Reviews and Stuff

BADMOUTH ROCKS! dep't (part 1-reviews): BADMOUTH has been receiving some excellent reviews lately, here's some choice quotes:

"Harmonica player Rockin' Jake and a stellar assemblage of New Orleans musicians have cooked up a rockin' gumbo of roots music. Jake, voted New Orleans top harp man by readers of offBEAT, certainly knows his way around the instrument, and he's not afraid to try it in varying musical contexts."
Tom Townsley, BLUES REVUE, Jan/Feb 2000

Music Review - Badmouth - Zuluzu published 11/12/99
New Orleans harmonica man "Rockin' Jake" Jacobs covers many musical styles in Badmouth. There's the hard-charging soul of "(Let's Make a) Soul Connection", featuring an impressive harmonica rave up. "Call Me Rockin' " jumps to zydeco with the help of the accordion-pumping Chubby Carrier. "Just Can't Lose These Blues" conjures the guitar-powered voodoo blues of Jimi Hendrix. Title-track "Badmouth" rocks the house with a distinctly south Louisiana blues feel. And in "Do Whatcha Gotta Do," there's room for second-line New Orleans funk and the soulful guest vocals from Lenny McDaniel.

Rockin' Jake, a transplanted Yankee, has got the skills and the will to be a welcome addition to south Louisiana's rich musical milieu.
By: JOHN WIRT Entertainment writer The Advocate Online

"Every CD released by the Rockin' Jake Band is geometrically better than the last one. If he can progress at this rate, Jake will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame five CDs from now. OK, maybe a little exaggeration, but Jake kicks some serious swamp butt.   His latest batch of creole Blues on his latest CD, "BADMOUTH", is especially strong..."  Eric P. Larsen, ISLAND NEWS, Key West 10/8/99

"'BADMOUTH' is certainly a triumph for Jake..."  Butch Heilshorn, FOSTER'S DAILY DEMOCRAT, Dover, New Hampshire  10/7/99

"...on their latest album, "Badmouth", Jake is gettin' down. Check out the the jam "Badmouth" goes seamlessly from a doin'-it-to-death type rhythm to a knock-down, drag-out blues bash. Jake's diversity keeps it interesting while his licks keep you listening. With Rockin' Jake, it's always good harp from a Badmouth." Brian Gold, WHERE Y'AT Magazine, New Orleans July/Aug '99

"*** Jake is probably the best harmonica player in New Orleans. Well beyond and early infatuation with Little Walter, he has a clear, sweet tone that gives and infectious sense of lilt to his bursts in the original blues/funk/rock songs and cover of War's "The World Is A Ghetto." As a songwriter, Jake has a flair for melody- "Soul Connection" and "It's All Good" stand out..."
Frank-John Hadley, DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE (international) Sept. '99

"...Rockin' Jake is someone to pay attention to.  'Waves' will get you reaching for the repeat button on the CD player.  Despite his youth, Jake can deliver deep heartfelt Blues, and this cut does just that..." MISS. VALLEY BLUES SOCIETY (Davenport, Ia) NEWSLETTER

"...Armed with a killer backing band and a dime-bag of blues-based tunes, Jake proves that tone and phrasing are as important as white-hot speed.  He has the speed when he needs it, but mostly 'BADMOUTH' showcases Jake and band's immersion in the musical culture of the Crescent City.  ...flat out stanky!"
Walter Pierce,  THE DAILY ADVERTISER, Lafayette, La.

"More so than ever, the latest musical media from New Orleans' harmonica hellcat, Rockin' Jake, lives up to his moniker.  And with this line-up, it's easy to figure out what makes Jake rock...the highs are many, the musicianship impressive, which means it's an ideal choice for your next barbecue." Dan Willging, OFFBEAT MAGAZINE, New Orleans

"...Jake shows that the Crescent City does have blues and soul, and Jake hits it all with this CD...it's all good!" Robert Jr. Whitall, BIG CITY BLUES magazine, Detroit

"On his new CD, BADMOUTH, local harp man Rockin' Jake has penned  the song destined to become his trademark.  'They Call Me Rockin'' barrels along with frenzied accordion work from Chubby Carrier matching Jake's boiling, zydeco-flavored harmonica shuffle, and the lyrics' perfect simplicity... with it's catchy 'All Night Long!' chorus, succinctly captures Jake's upbeat musical vision.  BADMOUTH features a cherry-picked band of some of New Orleans finest musicians..." Scott Jordan, GAMBIT, New Orleans
